Logitech has returned to solar-powered peripherals with the Signature Slim Solar+ K980, a $99.99 full-size wireless keyboard that runs on light from any source and adds a dedicated AI key for quick access to assistants. Sales begin today through Logitech’s website and major retailers.
The K980 is Logitech’s first new solar keyboard in over a decade and is positioned as a no-cable, no-charging option for home and office. The company says a fully charged unit will keep working for up to four months in complete darkness. The internal battery is rated to last up to ten years.

What’s new
At the heart of the board is Logi LightCharge, a system that tops up the battery from either sunlight or indoor lighting. Logitech specifies a minimum of 200 lux to maintain charge, a level typical of dim daytime rooms or a bright desk lamp. There is no USB charging port. Power management and the solar strip handle energy on their own.
The keyboard debuts an AI Launch key. Out of the box, the key opens Microsoft Copilot on Windows or Gemini on ChromeOS. Users can reassign it in Logitech’s Options+ software to launch other tools, such as ChatGPT, or to run Smart Actions macros.
Specs and layout
The K980 uses a full-size layout with a number pad, arrow cluster, and a function row with media and brightness controls. It pairs to up to three devices over Bluetooth and supports Logitech’s Logi Bolt receiver if you prefer a dongle on desktops, though a receiver is not included with consumer models. Dimensions are 430.8 mm by 142.9 mm by 20.2 mm, and weight is 700 grams.
Three versions are available. The universal multi-OS model with dual Windows and macOS legends costs $99.99. A Mac-specific version at the same price drops the Windows legends and is sold in North America only. A Business variant costs $109.99 and includes a Logi Bolt USB-C receiver along with support for Logitech Sync and Tune for fleet monitoring and updates.
What Logitech says
“Even the need to think about charging can be a distraction, so we designed Signature Slim Solar+ to take that off your plate completely. It stays powered by light, any light,” said Art O’Gnimh, General Manager of Logitech’s Core Products Group, in the company’s launch announcement.
Cameron Faulkner at The Verge also confirmed with Logitech that the battery is “safely user-replaceable,” encased in plastic, with spare parts supplied by iFixit. That addresses long-term serviceability, which is often a weak point for sealed wireless gear.
Power details and practical use
LightCharge requires around 200 lux to keep the battery topped up. In practice, a well-lit office or a desk lamp should meet that threshold. If your setup falls below it for long stretches, the battery can bridge gaps. Logitech claims up to four months of operation in total darkness after a full charge. There is no wired fallback if you run the battery flat, so adequate lighting and occasional checks in the Options+ app are part of the ownership routine.
Sustainability and materials
Logitech says the graphite finish uses 70 percent certified post-consumer recycled plastic. The off-white Mac option uses 52 percent. The internal plate uses low-carbon aluminum produced with renewable energy. These choices are in line with Logitech’s push to put recycled content and carbon labels on new peripherals.
Where it fits
Logitech previously shipped solar keyboards like the K750 and K760 earlier in the 2010s. Those models also ran on light but lacked modern multi-device software and today’s AI-centric shortcuts. The K980 updates the idea for current workflows and adds the AI key, which can be a quick launcher or a macro trigger depending on how you set it up.
The move lands in a small but renewed niche. Recent coverage has noted competing self-charging boards, including a Lenovo model at a similar price, though that unit keeps a USB-C port and adds tilt legs. Logitech is betting that truly cable-free convenience, multi-OS legends, and software integration will appeal to anyone tired of charging cycles on input devices.
Variants and enterprise angle
For IT fleets, the Business version adds a bundled Bolt receiver and visibility through Logitech Sync. Admins can see device and firmware status and push updates or monitor issues across users. Logitech says employees can customize up to 23 shortcut keys, including the AI Launch key, which can reduce repetitive tasks. The AI key itself is not present on the Mac-only variant.
Limitations to note
There is no USB charging port or wired mode. If your workspace is chronically dim, you will want to position the board where it can see light or add a brighter lamp. Reviewers have also pointed out that a wired fallback would have removed edge-case anxiety. Still, the promise of long life between light exposures, a decade-long battery lifespan, and user-replaceable parts should mitigate most concerns for typical desks.
Another regional note: the Mac-specific version is currently limited to North America, while the universal model is available globally. Check local listings for exact stock and colors.
Price and availability
The Signature Slim Solar+ K980 universal and Mac versions are $99.99. The K980 for Business is $109.99 with the receiver in the box and enterprise management features. Logitech lists global availability starting September 24, 2025. Major retailers and Logitech’s storefront are carrying the keyboard from launch day.
Why it matters
Recharge anxiety is a common pain point with wireless keyboards. By leaning on a solar strip and a low-draw design, the K980 aims to remove charging from the to-do list while keeping modern comforts like three-device pairing, dual-OS legends, and deep software customization. The dedicated AI key acknowledges how people now work, whether that means launching Copilot or running a personal macro that opens apps, fills a prompt, or toggles mic and camera.
Bottom line
If you want a clean desk and you work in a reasonably lit room, the K980 is a simple proposition. It costs the same as many premium non-solar boards, but it promises months of use without direct light and years of service from its battery. Keep in mind the lack of wired backup and confirm regional variants before buying, especially if you need the Mac-specific layout. For offices that manage fleets, the Business model’s receiver and Sync support make deployment easier.
